Vuelta a América 2015

America Tour 2015

(As we read the report of a sports reporter)

And with the launch begins one of the last most difficult stages of this  America Tour 2015. In the next few days the bicycle group needs for the last time to cross the Andes. Today the start is the wine capital of Argentina, Mendoza, where the small group was able to enjoy a few days of rest, which allowed them  to regain strength. The good food of the region has helped. We hope that the pleasure of good wine brings no doping problems.

Photo 1: Mountains of plastic bottles filled with water at the chapel of the "dead Correa".

Of which there is a vast number in Argentina. The legend says that Correa died of thirst while she was searching for her injured husband. To prevent this from happening again, the faithful leave filled bottles at the wayside.

The group will rise again from the capital of wines  to over 3000m to the mountain pass "Los Libertadores" or also called "Cristo Redentor". And from this height it goes to the Chilean coast. We remind our fans that the group has not seen the coast since the events in Panama. That was six months ago. Since then  the route always went  over mountains.

Photo 2: We see the famous flight of the Condor.

Even before we thought we had seen them but only now we are sure. Apparently, the road has been blocked in recent days for the traffic, but not because of America tour in 2015, but because the weather was very bad. Even now it has no pity on the cyclists. There is almost a meter of snow on the mountain pass. Add to that a strong storm that lifts the snow and gives the impression that the temperature would be below -10 ° C. But we are sure that the cyclists have built up good reserves by the abundant food of beans and the copious drinking of wine. They pass the long line of cars and trucks lying still, up to the mountain pass. However, there are few spectators. Only the people in their car and lorries cheer the cyclists on: "sos una grande", "capo", "Genio" and many other things apart from the frequent honking when passing.

The storm on the pass is so strong that one or the other driver sometimes has to push his bike and still others are pushed to the curb. We have no pictures of this part of the journey because the satellite connection has broken down because of the storm (in reality we do not have the courage to stop and bring the camera in position).

The winner reaches the mountain pass in a sprint. Here  the participants strengthen themselves with some food and put on some more clothing  against the cold, and then it goes downhill.

Photo 3: the 28 curves of the continuous serpentine "Los Cararcoles".

Photo 4: Garbi honks behind the truck.

Photo 5: The great overcome wall in the background.

Finally: Here they come. Erik, of the SexoBank team, driving a few meters in front of the
second placed Garbiñe, of Mofostar. She clenches her teeth and the rump, and closes up to the predecessor. This is a tight finish. Here they are, overcoming the last hills, already in the town where they meet many surfers. Sprint to the finish and ............ .. undecided! Let us leave the others to struggle, we are here for fun.

Amerikarundfahrt 2015

A few days of hospitality to rest

The movement is characteristic of our endeavor, as with all humans and animals. Therefore, many years ago Basques, out of necessity or interest, traveled across the Atlantic and landed in Argentina. The descendants of these compatriots have been our contacts  in recent weeks.
In San Juan we meet Ofelia Larrea, president of the Euskal Etxea (House of the Basques) in this town. Some of their ancestors came to this country early last century. But only after the bombing of Gernika during  the Spanish Civil War, the whole family left their farm on the slopes of the mountain   Sollube and settled in Argentina. Ofelia was born here. We have with her and Cristina Hornilla an interesting conversation about various associations of Basques in Argentina (more than 100), who try to maintain the Basque culture at more than 15,000 km of their origins.
Between San Juan and Mendoza, our next destination, we meet Luis and his comrades of the aircraft club. Although they have nothing to do with our homeland, the conversation with them in terms of "culture" of parachutists, pilots and all other "crazies", as they call themselves is very interesting for us. As happens so often on our trip, which has already brought us many surprises, we pass the club by chance. We were kindly offered to set up our tent on the property. However, as during the afternoon there is so much to see for us, we postpone the installation. We can observe two Brazilian parachutists and a pilot who just starts his fifth hour of flight.  We ask a lot of questions about this world that is unknown to us. Luis responds to everything patiently while he offers us sweet Mate. At dusk, he leads us to a house that normally accommodates people who take part in competitions.
We are amazed at the luxury of having a kitchen, bunk beds, table and chairs. We have also for the first time on our trip heating. The night is a delight. We think of our next destination, Mendoza, where we want to arrive before 5. 7.

The Vice President of the House of Basques in Mendoza, Javier Salvarredi, made us an irresistible proposal:  to celebrate San Fermin with a typical Basque bean dish. The beginning of the celebrations is the 7th  in Pamplona, but since this date is a Tuesday, the celebration will take place in
Mendoza on Sunday.

It touches you when you can celebrate this Basque festival with more than 100 people. They share the feelings of belonging to a culture that is at home on the other side of the Atlantic. Together we not only eat the red beans, but watch the children in their "fighting with the bulls", see Basque dances and drink wine in the Gaztetxe (Youth House). Usually it is run in self-responsibility by the young people. Of course we also play Mus (a card game, which is based on cheating and betting), without it we would not the Basques  we are.

But not all is happiness, during the celebration in the Basque society. Unfortunately we had to witness the football defeat of Argentina against Chile in the America Cup in 2015. Argentines and Chileans do  not like each other particularly. After 90 boring minutes  and the prorogation it came to the penalty shoot-out and Argentina missed the goal.

Photo: Javis friends after Higuain in the 88th minute  misses the target, although he did not have the goalkeeper in front of him.

But even if the Argentine selection lost their game,  Javi and his teammates managed to win the trophy in their category. They celebrate the victory extensively. Congratulations Hattrick!

Photo: Javi in the gate, with the shirt of Real Sociedad, could not prevent a penalty.

Photo: The full team Hattrick.

Photo: A pleasure, first the bicycle path and then the street art of Mendoza.
However, these were not all the parties, there were two more to come.  Javis sister, Lorena, has her birthdayon the 9th  of July. The day is also the aniversary of Independence in Argentina. Traditionally, the typical dish "locro" is eaten. We had heard of it but so far had not  had the opportunity to try it. It is delicious! The ingredients are corn, porotos (beans or lentils), zapallo (pumpkin) and, above all, as always in this country, meat, sausages .... We can kill two birds with one stone: what  started as a family meal  for the relatives of Lorena's and Diego's, turns later to a party with singing, dancing and laughing. We enjoy it very much.

Photo: from left to right: Garbi with Lanitas, Javi, Susanna, Lorena with Iker, Diego, Guillermo with Iñaki and Erik.

We owe the family, the recovery of our physical and mental powers, which we need to meet the challenges ahead: crossing the Paso Libertadores at 3,800m altitude in winter, which definitely means snow. We know that the road is covered with snow, but it is said that in the coming days it will be free of it thanks to  machines, which are used. In addition, one  expects a climbing of the temperatures to -4 ° C. Lest we come in stronger cold, we should rather start our way.
See you soon and thank you very much.

DEUTSCH

Foto: Die komplette Mannschaft Hattrick.

Northern Region, the stereotypes do not agree

It is  10 o'clock in the morning and we begin a new part of our trip. Today we are going to cross the last pass over 4,000 meters above sea level reached in our journey. We say goodbye to the family who run the restaurant, next to where yesterday we erected our tent. They are especially Interested in the porridge, which we cook for our breakfast. Perhaps they have observed that  many other cyclists, who camped next to their restaurant, ate the same breakfast and wonder if this is the secret to renew the strength for the daily effort.

Photo 2: Our last mountain pass of more than 4,000 m, the next is only 3,800 meters high.

In this country  the people who are interested in us, our trip or anything else related to our company, have decreased in number. Those who approach us, want mostly just to take a picture with us. They ask, but do not listen. On the contrary, they talked about or of a subject that concerns Argentina and themselves. One might think that this behavior would have to do with the famous ego of the  inhabitants of this land. However, we believe the Argentine culture encourages people for some reason, above all, to focus on themselves (and thus get to know themselves better), something which is desirable in society.

Enough of psychological philosophy and back to actuality.

Photo 3: As we are talking about philosophy, with these words we identify ourselves a bit (live with force, craziness and freedom).

These first days in Argentina are marked by cold, bare landscapes and, above all, by the wind. Today is no exception. At every turn in the road that leads us to the Abra Morado, the wind blows from the side. Sometimes it pushes us and then it makes cycling even more difficult than it is already. Every now and then it takes a drop of nasal mucus from us and lets it fall to the ground with force. During the rise we eat behind a rock, to protect us against the wind. But even so Erik gets a full load of sand into the food, it even overturns our bicycles.

Photo 4: Hillside of Lipan, on the descent to Pumamarca.

We can see from this height rocks of great geological importance. It says so on panels at the roadside. It is a gift to be able to admire the multicolored rock formations on the descent to Pumamarca where we also see the so-called "Mountain of seven colors". And not only that: We are now at an altitude less than 3,600 m, which is more human than the former, where we had to go during the last four weeks. It seems to us as if we are suddenly surrounded by more life. Lush trees, a lot of colors, smells .... Yes, the smell is coming again!

Photo 5: Colors in the mountains of Pumamarca, spectacular!

With renewed courage we continue our journey and think that perhaps we should call the Basque club in San Salvador de Jujuy and pay  them a visit. But the call is not answered, so we decide to drive a few kilometers less to the village of Bárcena. The habitants are celebrating the day of their religious patron. As everybody else we are also given cocoa and cake. Vanesa invites us for the night to her home. Before leaving the party she and her girlfriends are for the famous Argentine meat to be fried.

Photo 6: On the way we see incredibly beautiful geological formations. This is the amphitheater in the Quebrada de las Conchas.

Photo 7: We are already several days on the National Road 40, there are only 4200 km to Ushuaia.

Unfortunately we have to wait another day before we can taste the meat and that with Don José, who lives on the edge of the beautiful road between Juyuy and Salta. The road runs along a ridge. We choose it in order to avoid the possible heavy traffic on the highway between the two cities. We do not regret it. Large trees, dikes, lagoons can be seen during the ride which runs on a curvy, narrow road. Everything reminds us of home, even the isolated houses in the countryside.

.Photo 8: A different way of traveling.

Photo 9: Sometimes the national road 40 is very boring. Always the same landscape in seemingly endless length.

Photo 10: Canyon in the valley of Ischigualasto.

Photo 11: The sunrise and sunset are incredible.

But you get used to everything with ease and after a week in the home of the Gauchos we no longer rate as high the local way of life, which comes close to the European quality of life. It seems we are approaching the Pampa, because the landscape is monotonous with shrubs, cacti, which bear few fruit, as well as sand and spines  we need to beware. Only near Cafayate at the Quebrada de las Conchas, the landscape changes and one sees the vines. We are told the Jesuits had introduced it in the XIX century. But in general, we find the days on the bike very monotonous. The distances between the places are great and we often meet people in the streets. However, when we meet someone, we enjoy the entertainment, the Mate and advice. We are thinking about whether we should change our itinerary and instead of directly to the south prefer to drive in zigzags between Argentina and Chile.

DEUTSCH
