Roatán, tropicalísimo!!

-¿Qué es lo que más destacarías tú de nuestra estancia en Roatán?

-Pues… Que ha sido una parada mucho más larga de lo habitual… De hecho ha sido de tanto tiempo que hemos podido trabajar algo, yo como instructor de buceo y tú como psicóloga. También me he ganado algún buceo reparando bicicletas. La isla ofrece posibilidades, parece…

-Y eso que la hemos visitado durante la temporada baja, ¿eh?

-Además del mal tiempo que hemos tenido durante muchos de los días aquí… ¿Vas a querer mermelada, miel o algo con el pan dulce?

-No, así está bien… ¡Qué lujo la mermelada (aunque no sea hecha por mi madre), la miel y el frigorífico que las mantiene imperecederas! Pronto volvemos a la austeridad del viaje, cosa que nos recuerda lo privilegiados que hemos sido estos casi 20 días en Roatán, donde hemos gozado de alojamiento y familia: Natalia, mi hermana mediana, está haciendo la temporada de buceo acá y ella nos ha acogido en su departamento rosa. Danke, Talchen, ¡für alles!

-Eso es, Talchen, la primera al mando… Nos ha preparado unas excursiones de lo más variopintas, en las que hemos descubierto solitarias bahías, comido exquisitas machucas (sopa de marisco) y recorrido casi todo el territorio isleño.

-Por nuestra cuenta, además, hicimos la excursión al Arboretum

Con Ángel, que dentro de poco convencerá a Corina, para emprender su viaje.

Se trata de un gran terreno, que busca realizar plantaciones sustentables para abastecer de productos frescos y saludables a la isla, sin la necesidad de tener que importarlos. Para nosotros resultó un gran aprendizaje la mañana que pasamos en el lugar. Es un deleite para los sentidos, disfrutar de nuevos olores, degustar deliciosas y novedosas frutas, apreciar desconocidos tactos y también escuchar aves de otras latitudes. El Arboretum cuenta con un jardín de conservación de especies autóctonas y foráneas en peligro de extinción, varios invernaderos de cultivo hidropónico de lechugas (de otra manera no se podría dar en estas latitudes), hierbas aromáticas, rúculas, escarolas… También cuenta con un interesantísimo paseo entre frutales originarios de todas las partes del mundo. Una no sabe que existan tal cantidad de frutas, y lo mejor es, que la visita no sólo es didáctica sino que también es ¡experimental!

Solo es necesario un pedazo de esponja y un sistema de riego con los nutrientes que requieren las plantas 

Pero quizás lo más importante de nuestra estancia aquí ha sido el descanso y la reposición de fuerzas. Nos vamos con algunos kilos más de los que teníamos cuando llegamos y muchas tardes leyendo, jugando a cartas o viendo películas… Como debe de ser cuando la lluvia cae de arriba abajo sin cesar.

-En una de esas tardes que yo estaba solo en casa descansando…

“Uaaaaaauuuuuhhhh! Acabo de tener un colibrí entre mis manos, ¡¡¡qué sensación!!! Mientras escribía esto, un colibrí ha entrado en casa y estaba tratando de salir por la ventana que estaba cerrada. Es una ventana, que no se puede abrir del todo, porque tiene una mosquitera fija. Lo he tenido que agarrar para sacarlo por la puerta de casa. Son preciosos los colibrís de aquí, con unos brillantes tonos verdes oscuros. Qué sensación tener a una de las aves más pequeñas y rápidas entre los dedos… Buuuaaaa… ha vuelto por el otro lado de la ventana, creo que me agradecía el gesto.”

Este es el que pude capturar en Arboretum, no el de casa...

-Es que la isla está llena de sorpresas. En cuanto a la vida submarina, aunque soy la menos indicada para hablar de ella, ¡la hemos flipado! (o, los que la disfrutan, la han flipado): un coral bien conservado, calamares, langostas, morenas, rayas, barracudas, enormes peces loro, pulpo… A menudo tan solo a unas brazadas de la playa y con el snorkel.  Y también me pareció interesante lo que contó Natalia sobre las montañas en la isla: que debajo del agua sigue igual… De hecho, Roatán es, ahora sí, la punta del iceberg en cuanto a lo que prosigue en las profundidades del mar. Debe de haber buenos buceos de pared, ¿no?

Delgado´s Bay, en algún remoto lugar de la isla

-Yo no he tenido demasiada suerte con las condiciones de los buceos que he hecho, pero sí: el lugar está rodeado de sitios de buceo impresionantes. Esto hace de la isla una meca para turistas y buzos, la mayoría, estadounidenses. Y esto a su vez que el coste de la vida no sea el más barato del país. Por eso hemos estado viajando a menudo a Coxen Hole, a 10km. de donde está la casa de Natalia, para comprar en supermercados algo más asequibles.

Una puesta de sol cualquiera, siempre que no llueva

-Aunque estos días no hayamos sido exactamente los biciviajeros de antaño, sí podemos decir que hemos conocido un poco de las gentes de acá: de la cultura Garifuna y su historia, de las interacciones tan despreocupadamente amables y serviciales de la mayoría de los lugareños o de lo mal y prepotentemente que conducen los taxistas aquí. Suerte que uno aquí, tiene tremendamente fácil viajar en “ride” o “a dedo”, como lo hemos hecho nosotros en más de 15 ocasiones.

-Sí, y aparte, pronto volvemos a la aventura con lo que sea a lo mejor uno de los momentos más excitantes del viaje, ¿cómo ves?
-Shhhhhhh, eso es mejor contarlo en la próxima entrada…

What would you particularly mention of your stay in Roatan?
Well, it was a longer stay than usual. Specifically, we were there so long that we even could work a bit, I as an instructor and you as a psychologist. Also, I've earned one or the other dive by repairing bicycles. The island seems to provide opportunities … although our visit fell in the preseason.
We had bad weather on many days.
Would you like jam, honey or something else with the sweet bread?
No, nothing more. It is a luxury this jam, even if it wasn't prepared by my mother. Also, the honey and the refrigerator are something special. Soon we must again accustom ourselves to do without this luxury. This makes us aware of how comfortable we have lived in the past 20 days here. We are well lodged with a member of the family, Natalia, my second sister who works here this season as a diving instructor.  We live with her in her pink painted apartment. Thank you Talchen for everything!! She organized everything. We have made many exciting trips with her while visiting the island with its secluded coves. The fish soup was a delicacy.

We also visited on our own Arboretum, an area for organic farming in order to supply the island with fresh vegetables and so avoid the import.. For us that morning was an interesting visit to the Arboretum. We enjoyed the new smells, the unknown, tasty fruit and the song of unknown birds. The place has a garden with native and non-native plants that are in danger of extinction as well as greenhouses for growing water lettuce (It wouldn't thrives here in any other way) and herbs, among them arugula. Our walk through an orchard with fruit from around the world impressed us very much. One cannot imagine ​​the variety of fruit; and the best of it, it was not just a didactic visit, but we could even try the various fruit.

But perhaps the peace and tranquility that we could enjoy was the best of our stay. We left the island with a few pounds more than when we arrived and after many afternoons we spent reading, playing card games and watching movies. So it had to be because the rain fell almost without a break.
One afternoon I was alone at home. As I wrote,  a hummingbird came flying into the room. He wanted to get into the open again through the window, but this was not possible due to the mosquito wire. I was finally able to catch him (what a feeling to have a hummingbird in my hand) and release him at the door. He went to the other side of the window. It seemed as if he wanted to thank me. The hummingbird of Roatan is beautiful, with its shiny dark green feathers.

The island is full of surprises. The marine life is impressive, although I cannot see much of it because I can only snorkeling due to the bad weather. The coral reefs are in good condition. You can see squid, shrimp and fish of every kind. Sometimes you meet these creatures not far from the beach. Natalia tells us that the island's mountains continue under water. Roatan is the Peak of what is submerged. Sure it would be interesting to explore the huge rocks as a diver.

I, Erik, has not had much luck with the diving, but I can confirm that the island is an impressive diving destination, a mecca for divers. Most tourists come from the United States even though the cost of living is not cheap. That is why we often went to Coxen Hole, located 10km away from Natalia's apartment, where we buy a bit cheaper in the supermarkets.

Although we could not be considered bicycle travelers in the past few days, at least we had the opportunity to meet some locals and get to know some of the culture of the Garifuna and there history. The contact was friendly and helpful in general. However, the taxi drivers are authoritarian in their behavior behind the wheel and drive badly. This is why we are happy to be able to hitchhike, which is not difficult. We have done it more than 15 times.
- But now back to our bike ride and perhaps unexpected experiences.

Was würdest du besonders erwähnen von deinem Aufenthalt in Roatán?

Nun, es war ein längerer Aufenthalt als gewöhnlich. Genauer gesagt, wir waren dort solange, daß wir sogar etwas arbeiten konnten, ich als Tauchlehrer und du als Psychologin. Außerdem habe ich mir den einen oder anderen Tauchgang durch die Reparatur von Fahrrädern verdient. Die Insel bietet anscheinend Gelegenheiten …

Und das, obwohl unser Besuch in der Vorsaison war.

Schlechtes Wetter hatten wir auch an vielen Tagen.

Möchtest du Marmelade, Honig oder etwas anderes mit dem süßen Brot?

Nein, nichts weiter. Es ist ein Luxus diese Marmelade, obwohl sie nicht von meiner Mutter stammt. Auch der Honig und der Kühlschrank sind etwas besonderes.

Bald müssen wir uns wieder daran gewöhnen, ohne diesen Luxus auszukommen. Das macht uns bewußt wie bevorzugt wir in den letzten 20 Tagen hier gelebt haben. Wir sind bequem untergebracht und außerdem bei der Familie; Natalia, meine zweite Schwester, arbeitet hier in dieser Saison als Tauchlehrerin und hat uns in ihrer rosa gestrichenen Wohnung aufgenommen. Danke, Talchen, für alles!! Talchen organisiert alles. Wir haben mit ihr die verschiedensten Ausflüge gemacht und dabei die ganze Insel besucht mit ihren einsamen Buchten. Die Fischsuppe war eine Delikatesse.

Außerdem besuchen wir alleine Arboretum, ein Gebiet für ökologischen Anbau, um die Insel mit frischem Gemüse zu versorgen und so die Einfuhr vermeiden zu können. Für uns ist dieser Vormittag in Arboretum ein interessanter Besuch. Wir genießen die neuen Gerüche, die  unbekannten, geschmackvollen Früchte und den Gesang der unbekannten Vögel. Der Ort beherbergt einen Garten mit einheimischen und nicht einheimischen Pflanzen, die in Gefahr des Aussterbens sind. Auch Gewächshäuser gibt es für den Wasseranbau von grünem Salat (auf andere Weise gedeiht er hier nicht), Kräutern, Rukola u. a. Unser Spaziergang durch eine Obstplantage mit Früchten aus aller Welt beeindruckt uns sehr. Man macht sich keine Vorstellung von der Vielfalt der Früchte; und das beste davon ist, es ist nicht nur ein didaktischer Besuch, sondern wir können sogar die verschiedensten Früchte probieren.

Aber vielleicht ist das wichtigste unseres Aufenthalts die Ruhe und die Erholung, die wir genießen können. Wir verlassen die Insel mit ein paar Kilo mehr als bei unserer Ankunft und nach vielen Nachmittagen, die wir mit Lesen, Kartenspielen und Filme ansehen verbracht haben. So mußte es auch sein wenn der Regen ohne Pause fällt.

An einem Nachmittag bin ich alleine zu Hause. Während ich schreibe, kommt auf einmal ein Kolibri ins Zimmer geflogen. Er will durchs Fenster wieder ins Freie, aber das ist durch den Moskitodraht nicht möglich. Ich kan ihn schließlich fangen (was für ein Gefühl, einen Kolibri in der Hand zu haben) und ihn an der Tür freilassen. Er macht sich noch auf der anderen Seite des Fensters bemerkbar als wollte er sich bei mir bedanken. Die Kolibri von Roatán sind wunderschön mit ihren glänzenden dunkelgrünen Federn.

Die Insel ist voller Überraschungen. Das Meeresleben ist beeindruckend, obwohl ich nicht viel davon sehen kann, weil ich nicht tauchen sondern nur schnorchel kann. Die Korallenbänke sind in gutem Zustand. Man sieht Tintenfische, Garnelen und Fische aller Art. Manchmal trifft man diese Lebewesen gar nicht weit vom Strand. Natalia erzählt uns, daß die Berge der Insel ihre Fortsetzung unter Wasser haben. Roatán ist die Bergspitze von dem was  unter Wasser liegt. Sicher wäre es interessant, diese Steilwände zu erkunden als Taucher.

Ich, Erik, habe nicht viel Glück gehabt mit dem Tauchen, aber ich kann bestätigen, daß die Insel ein beeindruckendes Tauchgebiet ist. Das bedeutet, es ist ein Mekka für Taucher. Die meisten Touristen kommen aus den USA und das obwohl die Lebenshaltungskosten nicht billig sind. Darum fahren wir oft nach Coxen Hole, das 10km weit entfernt liegt von Natalias Wohnung und haben dort in den Supermärkten eingekauft, die etwas billiger sind.

Obwohl wir in den letzten Tagen nicht als Fahrradreisende gelten können, haben wir wenigstens die Möglichkeit die Einheimischen etwas kennenzulernen, die Kultur der Garifuna und ihre Geschichte. Der Kontakt ist im Allgemeinen unbeschwert freundlich und hilfreich.  Die Taxifahrer sind jedoch autoritär in ihrem Benehmen am Steuer und fahren schlecht. Daher sind wir glücklich per Anhalter fahren zu können, was nicht schwierig ist. Wir haben es mehr als 15 Mal ausprobiert.

- Aber jetzt zurück zu unserer Radtour und zu vielleicht ganz unerwarteten Erlebnissen.
